Description
Mardi Gras beads are a very personal thing to New Orleanians. Most residents have an embarrishing amount stored away, waiting for an event where they can be used appropriately.
The history and origins of this tradition, like all things NOLA, is old and complicated. The complication can be as dire as the wide spread flooding in 2017 which resulted in a city wide emergency effort to clear clogged catch basins of debris, including Mardi Gras beads. Not just some beads, 46 tons of beads. Not a total of 46 tons, that was in a five block stretch of St. Charles Ave.
But still, some are so nice, they are hard to part with. Even if it means stringing them up on a wrought iron fence in front of the dumpster.
